What to Expect: The Tile Installation Process Explained

A lot of homeowners are surprised by how much happens before the first tile goes down. Tile work is 70% preparation and 30% installation — and skipping the prep is why tiles crack, lift, or fail within a few years. Here's exactly what a proper tile job looks like, step by step.

It starts with the substrate. Whether it's a floor or a wall, the surface beneath the tile has to be clean, flat, and stable. For floors, that means checking the subfloor for movement and leveling low spots — tile doesn't flex, so any movement underneath cracks it. For showers and wet areas, we verify the waterproofing membrane is sound before any tile touches it.

Next is layout. This is the step that separates good tile work from sloppy work. We dry-fit the layout to plan where full tiles land and where cuts happen, so you don't end up with thin slivers of tile along a visible wall. A planned layout keeps grout lines consistent and the finished job looking intentional.

Then comes setting. We mix thinset to the right consistency for the tile material — different tiles need different mortars. Tiles are set with consistent pressure, spaced with leveling clips where needed to prevent lippage (where one tile edge sits higher than its neighbor). This is slow, deliberate work, and rushing it shows.

Grouting comes after the thinset cures, usually the next day. Grout is mixed, applied diagonally to force it fully into the joints, and wiped clean before it hardens. For wet areas, we apply a sealer once the grout cures to protect against water and stains.

Finally, cleaning and curing. Haze is buffed off the tile surface, the area is cleaned, and we walk you through the finished work. Most floors are walkable in 24 hours and fully cured in 72 — we'll give you exact timing based on the material and conditions.

The reason this matters: shortcuts at any step shorten the life of the tile. A floor set over an unlevel subfloor will crack. Grout applied too wet will be weak and crumble. A shower tiled over failed waterproofing will leak behind the wall. When you hire a professional, you're paying for the discipline to do every step — not just the visible ones.
