9 Common Handyman Mistakes Homeowners Make

We're not against DIY — plenty of small projects are perfectly fine to tackle yourself. But after years of fixing what went wrong, we see the same mistakes over and over. Here are the most common ones, and what they usually cost to undo.

Mistake one: mounting into drywall alone. A TV mounted only into drywall — not into a stud or proper anchor — is a TV waiting to fall. Drywall doesn't hold weight. We've re-mounted plenty of TVs that were one bump away from crashing down, along with the drywall they tore out on the way.

Mistake two: using the wrong caulk. There's a reason different caulks exist — kitchen and bath, paintable, exterior, concrete. Using the wrong one means it fails, peels, or grows mold. The right caulk for the right spot is the difference between a seal that lasts years and one that fails in months.

Mistake three: over-tightening supply lines. Hand-tight is usually enough; cranking with pliers crushes the rubber washer and causes the leak you were trying to prevent. A surprising number of under-sink floods start with an over-tightened supply line.

Mistake four: skipping surface prep before painting. Painting over dust, grease, or loose paint means the new coat doesn't adhere and peels. Most paint failures aren't bad paint — they're bad prep. Washing, patching, sanding, and priming are what make paint last.

Mistake five: ignoring the layout when tiling. Starting in a corner and working outward without a dry layout is how you end up with sliver cuts and misaligned grout lines in the most visible part of the wall. A planned layout takes an hour and saves the whole job.

Mistake six: assembling furniture with leftover hardware. If there are screws left over, something is wrong — not the kit, the assembly. Leftover hardware usually means a structural connection was skipped, which is why the dresser wobbles six months later.

Mistake seven: patching drywall without texture. A flat patch on a textured wall stands out like a sore thumb. Matching the texture — orange peel, knockdown, whatever the wall has — is what makes a patch disappear. Most DIY patches are visible for this reason.

Mistake eight: using mismatched or wrong fasteners. Drywall screws aren't structural. Deck screws aren't for drywall. Using whatever screw is in the jar leads to failures, stripped heads, and connections that don't hold. The right fastener matters.

Mistake nine: putting off the small stuff. The dripping faucet, the sticking door, the hairline crack — these are warnings. Ignoring them doesn't save money; it converts a $20 fix into a $2,000 repair. The most expensive handyman mistake is waiting.
